Hi: I am the Other Half of this blog, aka, the Mother of Mother/Daughter Can Can.
It is all true. I am simply delighted to be here living only an hour from our only child and her new husband. My Top 5 reasons narrow down to one: there is a point in this mothering (parenting) game where it becomes the best spectator sport on earth. I am a passionate fan of my child's interesting life, and though we have our own, my husband and I want to be able to watch from up close. And there is nothing better than being part of the action in a steamy, spicy, active kitchen.
So, without further ado, THE LIST:
butter
gravlax
ketchup
ricotta
strawberry jam (real local strawberries)
lemon curd
marshmallows
fruit popsicles
chocolate fudge pops
ginger beer
ginger honey
limoncello/de crema
strawberry and red currant jelly
apple jelly/ rose petals (all from our garden)
rose hip with orange jelly
pears with cloves (my grandmother's recipe)
mozzarella
tomato(es)/sauce
peaches
The books we are using: The first four are Kate's wonderful inspired Christmas present to me
Christine Ferber Mes Confitures
Karen Solomon Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It
Eugenia Bone Well-Preserved
Bernardin Complete Book of Home Preserving
My own contributions
Ann Hodgeman Beat That!
Farm Journal's Freezing and Canning Cookbook
And we`re off!

Christmas Presents
My mom is moving to Nova Scotia after living far away from me for almost ten years. I am excited about this for many reasons, but here is the top five:
5) no more holiday pressure to fit all quality time into one week
4) her oatmeal, magically it tastes better than any oatmeal ever made by any other human
3) borrowing from her cookbook collection
2) playing games with my husband and my parents, the only people in the world I can trounce guilt-free (no one likes a trouncer!)
and the number one reason I am excited to have my mom near by: LEARNING HOW TO CAN AND PRESERVE TOGETHER.
Is that dorky? I don't think so. Booze is preserved and booze isn't dorky.
To celebrate her homecoming (and Christmas) I bought every book on canning I could find, wrapped them separately and gave them to her. We curled up on her butter leather sofa (number 6 on the list of why I am excited my mom is home: adult furniture to luxuriate in) and leafed through every page, making a list of what we are going to attempt to do this summer. We argued and maligned each other's choices, we bickered about whether you could safely substitute lemon juice for vinegar, we debated whether or not Christine Ferber's Mes Confitures is a practical guide or an unattainable fantasy. At last we achieved harmony: a list of twenty or so projects to complete in 2010.
